The mother, the grandmother, the godmother, the patron saint of masturbation, Betty Dodson, left the realm of the living this year at the age of 91. While never a household name, she spent decades fiercely advocating at the top of her voice for the human right to pleasure and for women’s right to own their sexuality in full. Through her tireless work she improved the health and happiness of countless women (and not a few men) by teaching them that pleasure is a birthright, and that masturbating without guilt or shame is not only great fun but a revolutionary act.
She also found time to produce a few movies on the subject.
Being a devoted fan since I jacked off to my mother’s copy of Liberating Masturbation at fifteen, i have acquired copies of her books and videos pretty much the moment they came out. In the print realm, there was the aforementioned title, followed by Selflove & Orgasm, which developed into Sex for One: the Joy of Selfloving, the first title released by a commercial imprint.
She also produced two videos documenting her Bodysex Workshops (including the group masturbation “erotic recess”), Selfloving: Portrait of a Women’s Sexuality Seminar (1991); and Betty Dodson’s Bodysex Workshop (2011). There’s also The Orgasm Doctor and Celebrating Orgasm, in which she documents one-on-one sessions teaching women to masturbate. My personal favorite is 2005’s Orgasmic Women: 13 Selfloving Divas, in which 13 highly proficient masturbators first discuss and then demonstrate their solo-sex skills. Since nothing floats my boat as much as female masturbation (except group female masturbation!) these videos give me a lot to work with as autoerotic inspiration.
This long weekend has been a tribute in orgasm to my hero, masturbating continuously to her books and videos. I came once humping my bed and reading Liberating Masturbation, reliving a memory from my teen years; I edged all the way through her Bodysex videos and blew my load watching the circle of masturbators; and jizzed on myself more than once to Orgasmic Women (the DVD extras include extended versions of the masturbation scenes–if real women getting themselves off is hot to you, this DVD is a must-have). I’m in the middle of another edging session as I write–perhaps this one will end with me busting a nut to one of her coaching videos. (Masturbation Coach–what a dream job, right?) Each time I cum, I remember to say, “Thank you, Betty” in gratitude for her great good work.
Well, back to it–lots of masturbation time left in the day…
