Largest Survey of American Sexual Behaviors Offers Snapshot of 21st Century American Sex

the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB). Conducted by a team of researchers at The Center for Sexual Health Promotion based at Indiana University, with funding from Church & Dwight (the company that brings us, among other household products, Trojan condoms), the NSSHB represents the largest nationally representative survey of sexual behaviors conducted in the U.S. since 1994, and in many ways a significant leap in sophistication and specificity in terms of what we mean when we talk about sex.

Men get less than three hours of orgasm

Clearly another clueless sex researcher. Don’t these guys know about multi-orgasmic masturbators and edging?

China Press reported that a man’s orgasm – the physical and emotional sensation experienced at the peak of sexual excitement – is an average of less than three hours throughout his lifetime.

The daily quoted Singapore Gleneagles Hospital gynaecologist Dr Fang Zhuang Wei as saying that due to busy lifestyles these days, couples were only sexually active before and immediately after their marriage.

For instance, he said if a man had an average orgasm of about 2.5 seconds over 40 years (from age 18 to 58), and had sex twice weekly with his wife, he would enjoy two hours, 53 minutes and 20 seconds of orgasm in his lifetime.

According to a Chinese online media report, if a man can live up to 78 years old and has a 2.02 seconds of orgasm each time he has sex, doctors in China estimated the man would have 16 hours of orgasm in total.

Abstract

Twenty males participated in a 2-month study examining the relationship between 8 a.m. plasma testosterone levels and orgasmic frequency. Within subjects, higher levels of testosterone are associated with periods of sexual activity. Over subjects, however, the direction of the relationship is reversed. Mean testosterone levels were higher for sexually less active individuals.

…Despite a lack of evidence that avoiding orgasm for a couple of weeks is harmful to health, one researcher explained that he would hesitate to propose such an experiment because avoiding orgasm has been viewed as a “paraphilia” by some experts. Apparently there are people who get off on not getting off—for whom the thought of avoiding orgasm produces intense excitement and elevated dopamine levels. Of course, therapists rarely concern themselves with such atypical behavior unless a person is harming himself/herself or others, and/or is distressed about the behavior. In any case, the screening process could weed out the rare person who avoids orgasm for kicks.

A second researcher confirmed that test subjects avoiding orgasm to participate in an experiment (or for any other reason) wouldn’t be engaging in a true paraphilia. Yet he remained doubtful that Western ethics committees would approve an experiment calling for a week or two of abstinence. Why? “Because it might cause momentary pain or distress,” even though the control subjects could bail out at will simply by climaxing. Also, keep in mind that the more distressed someone is when passing up orgasm, the more likely that s/he is caught in a binge pattern—something it would be helpful to know more about. …
