Looking Back- The solitary vice
The superstition that masturbation could cause mental illness
… Far more treacherous was the “solitary vice,” masturbation, which had been thought of as somewhat less rousing than the real thing. Graham, however, pointed out that as a solitary activity, the practice of masturbation was likely to start at an earlier age and to occur more often than partnered sex. Most important, the lack of a partner meant resorting to fantasy and the conjuring of erotic scenes and lewd images that surely stirred the brain to a fever pitch. (By this analysis, lusting in the heart was physiologically equivalent to lusting in the flesh.) Because the brain’s inflamed state could be transmitted to any organ or tissue of the body through the nervous system, all manner of disease could follow. But with sexual solitaire, the climax—rather the culmination—was insanity. “This general mental decay,” Graham warned, “continues with the continued abuses, till the wretched transgressor sinks into a miserable fatuity, and finally becomes a confirmed and degraded idiot, whose deeply sunken and vacant glassy eye, and livid, shriveled countenance, and ulcerous, toothless gums, and fetid breath, and feeble broken voice, and emaciated and dwarfish and crooked body, and almost hairless head—covered, perhaps, with suppurating blisters and running sores—denote a premature old age—a blighted body—and a ruined soul!” ….

In the course of the 19th century, more and more doctors linked masturbation to severe mental illness. As explained in 1867 by Henry Maudsley, the greatest British psychiatrist of his time, masturbatory insanity was “characterized by … extreme perversion of feeling and corresponding derangement of thought, in earlier stages, and later by failure of intelligence, nocturnal hallucinations, and suicidal and homicidal propensities.” In other words, masturbators were mad potential killers, and it seemed only prudent to have them locked up in an asylum.
To make matters worse, in its later stages the disease was considered incurable. All medical science could really do was to concentrate on the prevention and early detection of the disease. Parents were therefore advised to tie the hands of their children to the sides of the bed, or to make them wear mittens spiked with iron thorns. Special bandages and “chastity belts” were to render the sex organs inaccessible. Doctors with a knack for mechanics invented ingenious contraptions that would “protect” people from “abusing themselves”. Finally, if everything else failed, surgery was recommended. The most popular surgical treatments were infibulation for males (i.e., putting a metal ring through the foreskin, thus preventing an erection) and clitoridectomy for females (i.e., cutting out the clitoris). However, cauterization and denervation of the sex organs and even castration were sometimes also deemed necessary.
Needless to say, all of these mechanical devices and surgical procedures constantly focused attention on the sex organs and their functions. Thus, it became nearly impossible for the “patients” to forget their “problem” even for a moment. Small wonder, then, that for many the concern with masturbation turned into a complete obsession.
American science fights the evils of masturbation and onanism
Electrosex chastity and an early version of the points of intrigue:
… The inside of the tube had a kind of plunger device that mechanically detected tumescence and then could trigger a couple of responses, an alarm bell for one and the other, Todd wrote, was an electric current “strong enough to assist the cure of sexual disease.”
The truly deluxe version additionally included sharp-edged, metallic points that Mr. Todd said were “of sufficient length to cause considerable annoyance and pain to the patient should any attempt be made to manipulate the penis by means of the tube.”

…
Masturbation or what was termed the "solitary vice" or "onanism" emerged as a veritable epidemic, especially amongst children. This forms the core around which the modern child becomes engulfed in what might termed the sexualisation of modern society. A medical and moral campaign was waged around the sexuality of children. Parents, educators, doctors were all alerted to hunt out any traces of child sexuality through a myriad of surveillance techniques and upon discovery subject to a seemingly inexhaustible array of corrective measures. One nineteenth century doctor invented a device which administered electric shocks to a sleeping boy’s penis upon erection.
How To Spot A Masturbator – ChristWire
For adults, masturbation exhausts. It can make one groggy and unfocused. It has a steamrolling effect, encouraging individuals to think more about sex and less about their work at hand. The connection toworkplace safety is evident, particularly with men operating heavy machinery or dangerous equipment. These are the very sorts of people who need to be completely focused and when their distractions and fatigues take over, the productivity of our workplaces suffers. In offices, internet porn is the most common cause of procrastination and another drain on the economy.
Despite the warnings of doctors and religious scholars, masturbation still remains very popular in America. As a society, this degree of self-manipulation goes too far in familiarizing men and women with their bodies. These people become less active in their communities and begin to see themselves as sexual predators whose sole purpose is to climax at the end of the night. Masturbation has had a ruinous effect on theinstitution of marriage. Countless couples have been destroyed by porn addiction, many other men have just given up on the idea of marriage because they prefer to pleasure themselves whenever they choose, free from the interruptions of family life.
LOVING VIGILANCE: WHAT TO LOOK FOR
To help turn the tide on this crisis, it’s important for parents and work supervisors to be able to spot a chronic or even just a casual masturbator in their midst. Maternal wisdom has long stated that oversleeping, locked doors, avoiding eye contact, messy beds, fear of clean underwear, long steamy showers and a pungent bleach-like odor on one’s bedsheets are all red flags of masturbation invasion. One trick passed on to me is that you can press your nose to a young man’s mattress, inhale deeply and (irregardless of the smell) announce, “That smells like semen.” If the boy’s face turns red and he runs from the room, the evidence is clear. The internet also makes it much easier for parents to identify a child’s masturbation habits. For health and safety, every adult should read the article “Protecting Our Children” from Christian Assemblies International about monitoring your kid’s web browsing history. Another helpful suggestion is to avoid laptops and keep the family computer in a public space like the TV room where web surfing can be watched closely. For a good discussion on the topic, read Amber Cooper’s article, “Is It Ok For My Christian Daughter To Masturbate?”

What is Viriguard?
Viriguard is a new approach to the traditional athletic supporter. An ordinary jock strap is made of cotton fibers and rubber and may be reinforced with a plastic cup. Viriguard, in the other hand, uses the latest in modern materials—steel and Kevlar fibers—to provide the best possible protection for your young men’s genitals.
Why should I trust in Viriguard for the boys and young men entrusted to my care?
As you may know, young men, particularly those involved in contact sports, are vulnerable to injuries to their genitals. Another problem, one which is in fact more common than parents, coaches, and ministers would like to believe, is masturbation.
While ordinary athletic supporters and cups can prevent injury, they can do so only if the athletes actually wear them. Moreover, they do nothing at all to prevent young men satisfying their lusts: all too often, the young athlete will use the privacy of a shower to relieve the pressures that have built up within himself.
Constructed with steel and Kevlar, Viriguard is a semipermanent athletic supporter. Once placed on the athlete’s body, it cannot be removed without specialized tools. The steel cup provides the protection for the groin, yet it is comfortable to wear for extended periods of time—months or even years.
What are some reasons young men should be fitted with Viriguard?
- Prevents masturbation.
- Prevents exposure to sexually transmitted diseases.
- Prevents causing unwanted pregnancy.
- Protects genitals from abuse or injury.
- Instills confidence.
- Increases focus and attention to tasks.
What are the important features of the Purity Athletic Viriguard?
- It protects the most vulnerable parts of a young athlete’s body.
- While preventing the wasteful expenditure of precious bodily fluids, it does not interfere with the natural excretory functions.
- It is easy to keep clean, even when worn for extended periods of time—it can even be worn for several months or even years at a time!
- Once fitted to the athlete’s body, it is tamperproof and impossible to remove without specialized equipment.
- For institutional customers, special shower rooms fixtures are available that attach directly to a fitting on the Viriguard. These fixtures allow your athletes to wash themselves in the groin area without touching themselves.
- Available in many popular colors, it forms the most basic part of any school or team uniform.

The attitude a person has toward his problem has an effect on how easily it is overcome. It is essential that a firm commitment be made to control the habit. As a person understands his reasons for the behavior, and is sensitive to the conditions or situations that may trigger a desire for the act, he develops the power to control it.
We are taught that our bodies are temples of God, and are to be clean so that the Holy Ghost may dwell within us. Masturbation is a sinful habit that robs one of the Spirit and creates guilt and emotional stress. It is not physically harmful unless practiced in the extreme. It is a habit that is totally self-centered, and secretive, and in no way expresses the proper use of the procreative power given to man to fulfill eternal purposes. It therefore separates a person from God, and defeats the gospel plan.
This self-gratifying activity will cause one to lose his self-respect and feel guilty and depressed, which can in the extreme lead to further sinning. As a person feels spiritually unclean, he loses interest in prayer, his testimony becomes weak, and missionary work and other Church callings become burdensome, offering no joy and limited success…
To help in planning an effective program to overcome the problem, a brief explanation is given of how the reproductive organs in a young man function….

Ill Effects Of Chronic Masturbation Since A Teenager
Hello. I am writing with deep concerns for my health. I started masturbating when I was 14 watching porn and continued until I noticed symptoms happening to me around the age of 18 going on 19. Throughout the years I would masturbate every day, sometimes close to 5 times a day watching porn in the recent 2 years. I have experienced dizziness, headaches, and pains in my penis, testicles, lower back and neck and also I tend to shake a lot when I touch things and sit down. I stopped having sex for the past year but continued to masturbate and smoke marijuana for the past 3 years, which probably worsened my problem. I purchased the ViaPal-HGH-C about a year ago but didn’t use it correctly and continued to watch porn and smoke, but I quit masturbating even though I would still ejaculate in my sleep and feel pain underneath my testicles. Also my sperm had changed — it’s not clear and smooth liquid anymore, but yellowish and jelly-like. Also during these ejaculations my testicle and penis have gotten smaller, but I continued to smoke. Now I have quit and trying to clean out my system. The last ejaculation was Sunday and the last time I have smoked is Wednesday, but I am very scared for my health because all the symptoms on your main page I have felt and now my 20 yr-old body sometimes feels 60. I am fully committed to getting my body healthy again and would like to know the steps I should take to rejuvenate. Thank you for reading this and I hope to be able to feel like myself again.
