Compulsive Masturbation

Warning for Satire-Impaired

From Compulsive Masturbation

Compulsive masturbation may frequently cause the person to be late for work, skip work entirely, or miss other activities. Masturbation also keeps alive a persistent and distressing fantasy life. Fantasy may preoccupy the sex addict to the point of his or her being ineffectual in work or play – … This fantasy life, as the disease progresses, may become increasingly destructive and vicious, and can ultimately lead to sadism, masochism, and even homicidal or suicidal ideation.

While most sex addicts hit bottom eventually – however the solitary nature of the compulsive masturbator’s behavior leaves their actions less subject to the direct consequences of other forms of sexual acting out.

The addict engaging in compulsive masturbation seeks therapeutic intervention for help as a last resort, seeking relief from anxiety, obsession, isolation and the inability to seek or maintain healthy intimate relationships.

Some compulsive masturbators do experience consequences through the viewing of inappropriate materials i.e. child pornography or through masturbating in inappropriate places i.e. the workplace or an automobile.

However, the most frequent consequence of compulsive masturbation is a life devoid of intimacy and a life filled with hidden shame.

While some sex addicts compulsively masturbate in a brief, routine fashion, others can act more as binge masturbators. They may find themselves spending hours at a time “lost” in fantasy, porn use and masturbation.

Unlike the routine masturbator, the binge masturbator can lose hours or even days to the internet porn, computer, porn videos and masturbate. They can literally lock themselves up at home, or in motel rooms and disappear into their masturbatory escape.

This type of behavior is not unlikely to result in genital injury due to the amount of time and energy devoted to the masturbation. While usually the injury and pain is not sought for pleasure, the binge compulsive masturbator will not use physical damage as a guide toward stopping or self-care. Instead they will likely continue their sexual activity, even hurting themselves further and bringing about more shame….

Potential negative consequences of masturbation

The capacity to love is reduced (e.g. dissociation of sex from friendship, affection, caring and other normal healthy emotions and traits which help marital relationships). This sexual side becomes, in a sense, dehumanized. Many sex addicts develop also an “alien ego state” (or dark side), whose core is antisocial lust devoid of most values. In time, the “high” obtained from masturbating to pornography becomes more important than real life relationships.

It has been commonly thought by health educators that masturbation has negligible consequences, other than reducing sexual tensions. Moral objections aside, one exception would appear to be in the area of repeatedly masturbating to deviant pornographic imagery, either in memories in the mind or as explicit pornographic stimuli which risks (via conditioning) the acquiring of sexual addictions and/or other sexual pathology. It makes no difference if one is an eminent physician, attorney, minister, athlete, corporate executive, college president, unskilled laborer, or an average 15 year old boy. All can be conditioned into deviancy. The process of masturbatory conditioning is inexorable and does not spontaneously remiss.

Sex addict masturbates chronically until his penis is sore or abraded, until there is no more semen to ejaculate. Or he may masturbate in his car, or in a park or restroom with the hope of being seen. He prefers masturbation over sex with a partner.

These are the risks we run for our masturbator lifestyle. It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.

Autobiography of a Masturbator: Porn O’Graphicus, Part 3

Here continues the personal sexual history of one of the web’s leading masturbators, Porn O’Graphicus. He posted this originally in the affiliated masturbator group OnaniaSupport, but I think his excellent story deserves wider exposure.

As I left off at the end of the previous “chapter,” it was December 1977, I was 12 years and a few months old, and my family and I were on the move again…this time, to Sacramento, California. Unlike our many other moves, I was not happy about it. It had taken me a long time to make friends in New England (a long story for another place and time). But, once I did, I got very sad when I realized that I had to leave them. And, I certainly didn’t like moving in the middle of a school year. Nevertheless, off we went.

To finish the story of my days in New England, I was in the 7th grade. This was the first time that I had to take a physical education class and shower afterward. I had already noticed that some of the boys even a year younger than me had already started to go through puberty. However, I was not worried. I don’t remember where I got the information, but I knew that the average age for that to happen was 13 and that it could happen a couple of years earlier or later. In addition, I still wasn’t clear on the orgasm thing, so I probably worried a lot less about it than a lot of other boys.

I hadn’t really discussed this with any of my classmates other than in a brief, matter of fact way. None of them made a big deal about it, and I didn’t want to be too forward in asking any questions. That left me not knowing what to expect or what signs to look for to let me know that I was about to hit “the big change.”

My Exam

Wanklogger has a disposal problem

… So, I was slogging through my paper, disgruntled that my usual post – exam plans would be shot. It was at that point that my dick had other plans. As I rounded out the 7th page, my mind wandered to the riskier times of my wanking life. Now, I used to be able to sit in a chair in one position for a long time with no problems. I have found as my weight has plummeted, that I am increasingly more fidgety, wanting to move around and do something. I felt this was a good precedent to set in the exam hall, because the level of suspicion would be higher if a non-fidgeter started fidgeting, over a fidgeter fidgeting.

I started to slowly, awkwardly and without detection rub my dick through my jeans. The foreskin had worked itself back a little and had exposed the sensitive part to my underpants. To capitalize on this, I moved my legs a bit to force movement of either my underpants or my penis. This proved to be quite effective, I was getting very nicely aroused when it dawned on me. This article’s accuracy is in doubt. See the discussion page. Please fact check, edit, cite references and remove this notice when the article has been improved. You may also comment on the discussion page. Notice added on 2007-12-02. Masturbation is sometimes called “self love” or “solo-sex”. It is a normal and healthy activity, and indeed is the way most adolescents discover what makes them feel good before they embark on an adult sexual relationship. In some cases however, it can become an obsession. And that is not healthy. Medically masturbation is not a physical disease. Problems arise when it starts interfering in our lives as a stress, guilt or a thorn in our relationships. Even if little masturbation does that then it is termed “harmful”.

Steps

  1. Decide whether your masturbation is a cause for concern. Masturbation has become an obsession when it interferes with your daily routine and your relationships. If you find yourself masturbating instead of spending time on more important things on a daily basis (and you are no longer a teenage boy, or girl!), then it might be time to break the cycle of behavior you are in.
  2. Isolate the cause. There is a reason or reasons you masturbate excessively, and you must find out why. If you concentrate on just stopping masturbation then you will just return to your addiction after a short period of success. So, why do you masturbate? It could be because you are bored, lonely, hurt, stressed, or it could be because of pains from the past. You’re going to have to get yourself in a relaxed state conducive to productive thought to really find out why you turn to masturbation. What are you trying to escape? Avoid focusing on symptoms. Saying you masturbate because it feels good is not the real reason you masturbate excessively. Dig deep into your feelings. If you find this part difficult you may need therapy to help you discover feelings you are not seeing clearly right now.
  3. Deal with your feelings. Dealing with feelings correctly is a skill and may be a skill you have forgotten or need to learn. Feelings are the result of thoughts. How we interpret the world and ourselves in our minds determines how we feel. We decide how we feel about things. If you masturbate because you feel bored then it is because you decided to feel bored. Nobody made you feel bored. You did.
  4. Change the thought patterns that are leading to excessive masturbation. You can no longer see masturbation as a solution to your boredom or loneliness. The more you learn to enjoy your everyday life the less you will want to turn to masturbation.
  5. Narrow down the times of the day that seem to be the biggest problem for you. Isolating the times of the day that you struggle the most can help you to focus your efforts better to overcome masturbation addiction. If you know you struggle most when you lay down at night then you can create a plan specific to that time of day, for example do not lay down. Maybe you need to exercise and burn some testosterone before going to bed. Exercise will also help you to be more tired and fall asleep faster. If you struggle at different times of the day or several times throughout the day then try to narrow down the times and the environment you’re in when this becomes difficult.
  6. Spend some time each day, perhaps in the morning, visualizing a new you. A more confident, sociable, outgoing you. It’s important that you start reprogramming your brain on a daily basis. It may seem awkward at first but if you persist, you will become more comfortable with your new self-image.
  7. Change your habits. You cannot overcome a masturbation addiction so long as you are spending a lot of time alone in your bedroom viewing pornography. Get out and meet people. Form healthy relationships and perhaps find another outlet for your sexual energy.
  8. Have an emergency way out – When the wave of temptation comes you need to have a pre-planned emergency way out. Many people have found that snapping a rubber band on their wrist helps break the automatic thought chain that leads to masturbation. Of course you don’t want to hurt yourself, just have something similar to get you mind off masturbating.

Tips

  • Do not merely CEASE masturbating; that is not the problem. Instead think of why you feel that you have an addiction or why you think it is bad to masturbate too much. Many who find themselves upset at the concept have been told it was a terrible practice and have accepted this.
  • If you have the tendency to masturbate at night, in bed, do some situps or other exersice before you get into bed so you burn some of your extra energy
  • Never give up hope you can and will overcome the addiction even if you need help

Warnings

  • Do not think of masturbation as evil, wicked or damaging to your health. It is not. You will not go blind or be unable to have a healthy sex life
  • Do not aim NEVER to masturbate again – aim to have it as part of your life, but a small part which, while it is comforting, does not interfere with relationships with others.

from How to stop masturbating

- by Ornella Moscucci / material copied from http://www.cirp.org/library/history/moscucci/

Unease about masturbation began, as is well known, in the early eighteenth century, when a book appeared entitled Onania; or the Heinous Sin of Self-Pollution (1707-1717) appeared anonymously in Holland and met with great success. By the middle of the century Tissot’s famous treatise, On Onania: or a Treatise upon the Disorders Produced by Masturbation (1760), had given a scientific veneer to the new anxiety about the “solitary vice.” Drawing on ideas about the wastage of bodily energy, Tissot argued that physical illness resulted from loss of semen, leading to general debility, consumption, deterioration of eyesight, disturbance of the nervous system, and so on. From 1800 onwards, the evils of masturbation were widely discussed in medical and moralistic texts; although attitudes to the practice were not monolithic, much was made of its physically and mentally deterious effects (see Hall; Hare; Engelhardt; Comfort). In essence, masturbation was less a vice than an antisocial activity, an egotistic enjoyment of pleasures that were the proper domain of heterosexual intercourse. (Lacqueur, Making Sex 227-30). Polluting and debilitating for the individual, it had a destablizing effect on society, as it prevented healthy sexual desire from fulfilling socially desirable ends–marriage and procreation, which was the foundation of the social order.
