Peter File #01: Introduction to the Series, by Dr. Margaret Wilson

We begin a series of chapters in “The PeterFiles”, a longitudinal case study of masturbatory addiction in the adult male, conducted at The Institute for Correction of Sexual Misbehavior. The series is made available in order to increase the public awareness and understanding of the problem of addictive masturbatory behavior in males, and especially as a resource to those women in a co-dependent relationship with a habitual masturbator.

We will call the subject “Peter Stroker”, an unsubtle but not-inappropriate pseudonym suggested by the subject himself. Peter, an otherwise healthy middle-aged unmarried male, is a long-term chronic masturbator under my personal treatment at The Institute for Correction of Sexual Misbehavior. His pattern of frequent masturbation began at puberty and was allowed to grow unchecked by proper parental discipline: his parents were uncomfortable discussing sexual topics and never warned him of the dangers of self abuse. He continued his secret practice throughout his youth, never forming fully satisfactory relationships with girls and becoming entirely habituated to manual sexual release. Although his private vice claimed increasing amounts of time, it did not prevent him from completing a graduate degree and entering a profession.

When I was in college, there was a girl in my classes named Janet, She was an ash blonde with large, bold breasts, full, voluptuous hips, and a free and easy manner which just radiated sexiness. (Editor’s Note: Extensive clinical experience teaches the importance of early intervention in the treatment of compulsive masturbation. As soon as signs of pubertal excess are noted, steps must be taken to prevent self abuse from becoming habitual. Although we prefer that an incipient masturbator be referred to a professionally trained therapist, we acknowledge that the wisdom and skills needed to treat youthful self abuse are not confined to the professional caste. Many young boys have been rescued from vicious habit by the dedicated efforts of a strong caring female in his environment — an aunt, a neighbor, a teacher — capable of intervening and rigorously enforcing standards of decency and self control. Often these women employ traditional methods of shaming and corporal punishment, which, when intelligently administered in an intimate familial setting, can be remarkably successful. Peter was fortunate to have an aunt extraordinarily capable to address his situation. That Peter received such early attention and yet failed to benefit can be charged only to his unusual predisposition towards masturbatory addiction.)

One summer early in Peter’s teen years, his mother sent him to stay with his Aunt Emily, who ran a boarding house for young men in the north of England. Peter was quite excited, both at the novelty of the trip and at the prospect of being more “on his own” for the summer. He had only recently discovered the boyish pleasures of masturbation, and he was looking forward to having opportunity to explore them out of the supervision of his parents. Little did he know that his mother’s suspicion of his secret activities was the prime motivation for sending him to the care of his aunt.

(Editor’s Note: Secondary sexual dysfunction is a frequent consequence of excessive masturbation, and premature ejaculation is one of the most common clinical manifestations. Two complimentary processes are at work: frequent masturbation lowers the ejaculatory threshold and accustoms the sexual organs to non-coital emissions, thereby setting the stage for praecox ejaculation; and the moral degradation of masturbation leads to lowered self esteem and increased anxiety with women, resulting in almost unbearable tension when presented with coital opportunity. The result is a loss of normal ejaculatory control, and a habitual masturbator is often unable to accomplish sexual intercourse even with a willing and understanding partner. In graduate school I really tried to develop a more normal sex life. I knew it was impossible to break my masturbation habit, but I hoped that I could learn to have normal sex with girls at least some of the time. I was still morbidly shy around the opposite sex, but I became good friends with Brenda, a nursing student, who (to my surprise) seemed attracted to me. After a couple of dates we wound up alone at her apartment and I knew now was the time. I was terribly nervous about having sex, but Brenda was a take-charge kind of girl and, with her leading me every step, we began to make love. But just when I was about to enter her, an irresistible urge to let go seized me, and I spilled my essence at her threshold, leaving her wet, sticky and frustrated.

(Editor’s Note: The explicit sense of shame that afflicts most habitual masturbators causes them to seek out (sometimes unconsciously) opportunities for punishment and correction. Often this results in a poorly articulated desire to be spanked, especially by a sexually attractive woman to emphasize the humiliation of the experience. The recent growth of commercial "spanking salons" may be largely driven by this phenomenon. Editor’s Note: Partialism, the fixation of sexual attraction on secondary sexual characteristics, is commonly associated with masturbatory addiction. The habitual masturbator, accustomed by long practice to manual gratification, loses his capacity to perform normal coitus and may find the primary female genitalia intimidating (see Peter File #05). He transfers his sexual attention to other parts of the female body, most often the bosoms, usually responding strongly to women with generous endowments. The logic of this choice is clear: After her vulva, the breasts are the most feminine part of a woman, and the traditional association of the breast with nurturing and sympathy provides an important reassurance to the sexually insecure masturbator. The summer after graduating from college, I spent traveling around the country, and I stopped for a week to visit one of my friends who was then living on a farm in northern California. The farm was run as a commune by several young, hippie-type men and women who had moved there to escape modern city life. They were all very friendly, and I liked them right away, but one in particular caught my attention, a girl named Molly. She was a redhead with a farm-girl plumpness, and a large, heavy bosom which gave her an earth-mother quality. I’ve always had a fascination with women’s breasts, and I was seized with a desire to suckle at her huge, nourishing mammaries. At first I was far too shy to make any approach, and contented myself with masturbating in secret thinking of her.
